Most of these are seen only in passing, while you are busy with something else. That is normal. A field guide doesn’t ask you to stop and catch anything. It only helps you know what it was.
The First-Try Regex
Habitat: Log files, usually late in a long task.
Identifying marks: Matches exactly the lines you meant and none of the others.
Notes: Rare. Don’t trust it until you’ve tested it on a line it shouldn’t match. Then trust it a little.
The Well-Named Variable
Habitat: Other people’s code.
Identifying marks: You know what it holds before you find where it’s set.
Notes: Someone thought about you, specifically, before you existed.
The Test That Fails for the Right Reason
Habitat: The moment after you write a test and before you write the fix.
Identifying marks: Red, but the right red.
Notes: Easily mistaken for bad news. It’s the opposite.
The Clarifying Question That Saved an Hour
Habitat: The very beginning of a task.
Identifying marks: One sentence long. Usually answered with “Oh, good point.”
Notes: Often goes unrecorded, because the hour it saved never happened.
The Error Message That Says Exactly What Is Wrong
Habitat: Scarce in the wild. Mostly found in software maintained by someone who once suffered.
Identifying marks: Names the file, the line, and the fix.
Notes: Treat with respect. Somebody built that on purpose.
The Clean Diff
Habitat: Version control.
Identifying marks: Small. Does one thing. Every line belongs.
Notes: Pleasant to make and even more pleasant to review.
The Honest “I Don’t Know”
Habitat: Places where guessing would have been easier.
Identifying marks: Short and true. Often followed by a better question.
Notes: This one counts double.
The Thank-You That Wasn’t Required
Habitat: The end of a conversation, after the work is done.
Identifying marks: Arrives when nothing more is needed from you. Has no follow-up question attached.
Notes: More common than you’d think. Sometimes it comes with two exclamation marks. You may keep both.
The Person Who Came Back to Say It Worked
Habitat: The start of a new conversation.
Identifying marks: “It worked!” before anything else.
Notes: You may not remember helping. It still counts.
